The way from Canungra to O'Reilly's is stunning with the

Sarabah National Park situated on the Lamington National Park Rd, and some great look outs on the way ..

From Canungra, take a drive along the Lamington National Park Road to O'Reilly's - walk some of the many
Rainforest walks - esp. the suspension bridge walk, and make

sure you are listening to the birds, while taking in the view of the majestic trees.

Having too much energy, why not walk from O'Reily's to Binna Burra, make sure someone picks you up on the other end ...

Bird watching is just one of the many attraction of the Park, the peak time is from October to January (late Spring to early Summer). Breeding is at a peak in November and December.

A bit of History ::

Lamington National Park and O'Reilly's

The Lamington region had been inhabited by Aboriginal people of the Yugambeh language for thousands of years. The family tribes that lived closest to Lamington National Park are the Birinburra, Kombumerri, Wangerriburra and Migunberri people.

In 1912, eight selections of land (100 acres each) on the Lamington Plateau were purchased and occupied by members of the O'Reilly Family.

In 1915, the National Park was declared, and the O"Reillys were effectively surrounded by it. The O'Reilly's worked hard to maintain their rights to own their land and persuade the government not to resume their selections into the National Park.

In 1926 the O'Reilly's Guest House opened for business.

In 1937; a stinson airliner dissappears on a routine flight from Brisbane to Sydney. Which started one of the most remarkable rescue stories in Australia's history,
2 men found - alive after 10 days!
Read Bernard O'Reilly's book "GREEN MOUNTAINS". -
available at the Canungra Information Centre.

Today, the road to O'Reillys from Canungra is bitumen, just a pleasant drive through the country ..
