Die Idee, Plakatsäulen aufzustellen, entstand, um dem damals um sich greifenden Wildanschlag von Plakaten entgegenzuwirken. Litfaß schlug den Behörden vor, überall in der Stadt Säulen aufzustellen, an denen die Menschen ihre Plakate anhängen konnten. Er bekam von der Stadt Berlin ein bis 1865 gültiges Monopol für die Aufstellung dieser Anschlagssäulen.
