Happy New YearI sincerely hope that 2008 will be a joyous and peaceful year for us all. As we will resume our visits in February I thought it would be nice to hear from our wonderful volunteers their views and experiences since coming along as a team member of "Pets For Therapy". We also have a doggie's perspective.
Cyn D. FisherPets For Therapy has provided me with a excellent opportunity to socialise my dogs with large numbers of people including the type of people dogs don't always get to meet (old, infirmed, in wheelchairs, those who move strangely). When Bee Cee was a baby I decided to follow Ian Dunbar's advice to introduce your puppy to 100 people in the first month you have it, I passed 100 in less than 2 weeks, thanks in part to PFT visits, and the clients at Burleigh Respite were absolutely thrilled to meet a cute fluffy baby Border Collie. The service dog trainees I've had (Monte, Wookie, Dizzy) also benefited from the chance to meet lots of residents and practice performing their task work in public. It's gratifying when residents enjoy the show and marvel at what a well-trained dog can do. I've also enjoyed getting to know Yvonne and the other volunteers - they are really great people. Julie-AnneI met Yvonne (and at that time JoJo) through my work at an Aged Care facility. At the time I acquired a two year old poodle, who had never been walked on a lead, was spoilt rotten in all the wrong ways, had never been trained in anyway. Yvonne said bring him along to training, at first she thought, Oh my goodness what have we here, but with Yvonne's knowledge of dogs and perseverance my Charlie Brown soon was visiting the homes with other dogs. Being involved with Pets For Therapy and Yvonne has brought about many smiles and some times a little tear...we have lost both 2 legged and 4 legged friends but one thing remains the same..... the outstanding welcome and happiness Yvonne and her troupe of volunteers bring to the community. Debbie TaplinFor Kirra and I to become a member of the Pets For Therapy team gave us a chance to get out and about together and show others just what we were made of, but more importantly it gave me a chance to share our good fortune of good health and happiness with others who it would seem are no longer at their best. As a team we were able to bring smiles and happy memories to many of the people we visited and performed for. Most people appreciated the time and effort we all put in to training our dogs so that they too are highly acceptable members of our society where unfortunately a lot of care and attention to the needs of others has gone by the wayside. I have heard many wonderful stories of other peoples dogs and other animal antics and although the occasional tear has sprung, all in all they were happy tears, happy memories. People from all walks of life have terrific stories to tell about their old mates, the dogs that have been in their lives. I hope I can continue my "giving" for many years to come.
Sandy GeorgeI would like to thank Yvonne & Misty for such a warm welcome to her fun and friendly group of volunteers. It has only been a short few months, which I have enjoyed so much. The dedication and fun ideas Yvonne comes up with to entertain the aged folk has been a pleasure to participate in. Hopefully my Jack Russell Zac will be able to accompany me and light up some dear faces this year.
Sonja DomlatilWhat does PFT stand for Pets (are the best) For (heartfelt) Therapy. When I joined PFT it was simply, to give my dog Ambra something worthwhile to do. Has it ever been just that? I get time to spend not only with my dog but with other like-minded people! It does not take much to be a PFT person - you simply need to love dogs and to like people, what is so hard about that? Sometimes when it all seems to get too much, I just have to think of the people we are visiting and suddenly a smile spreads over my face and my world is once again right. Would it not be selfish not to share your fortune of a four-legged companion who does never judge and is always so eager to please? If anyone has ever seen the interaction taking place between the human and the canine species, you will know exactly what I am talking about! I joined PFT, because I wanted to do something worthwhile together with my dog and it has been everything and more for my best friend and me. Friendships have been established and I just have to watch the joy in the eyes of the people we visit to know I am the fortunate member of a very special bunch of people, who do a great job for another group of very special members of the community.
Ricki & Zumba
I am often asked why I do Pets For Therapy. My answer is always the same- if I was in a nursing home I would love someone to bring me a dog to pat, that is why I do it. It makes you feel good to bring a little bit of joy to someone else in life.
Missy & MuffinSome time back my little dog Muffin and I were invited to join the Pets For Therapy program. Every week these calm and friendly dogs give many people young and old, the chance to stroke and talk to them. The dogs perform basic obedience tricks and agility. How cute they even dress up for special occasions like St Patrick’s Day, Easter, Halloween etc. each month a new theme.
Huey - Basenji X Foxie (the handsome one)My first training night.

A lovely afternoon which we all enjoyed immensely and we were touched by Jenny's words when she said that she regularly has contact with the Nursing Homes, Respite Centres and Retirement Villages that we visit and the feedback she receives about the joy and smiles that our team of volunteers bring, both canine and human alike is of the highest order. To be acknowledged by a respected company such as Somerville Funerals is a tremendous boost for our organisation. ISSUE 15 - Volunteers Newsletter - The month of September - October |
Our Team of Volunteers continue to spread cheer throughout the facilities with their doggies spruced up for spring and what a lovely lot of rain, the birds were chirping, the grass greener and the trees happy.
My apologies for the cancellations due to my trip back to hospital (seems to be some attraction there of late). The Diversional Therapists assure us of the wonderful therapy our volunteers and their canine companions bring to their residents, sometimes the only response in the way of a smile or movement of a hand to pat one of our dogs. Don at Southport Nursing Care was so emotional when he thanked us for sharing his birthday in such a special way. That was such a wonderful reward to us for our time and the effort we put in to each visit to make it a special day at the facilities we visit.
IndyThe chequered flags were flying, our dogs enjoyed riding in the Indy car wearing their chequered bandanas and caps and adding to the fun and laughter Pappy our little Pappillon was a most attractive Miss Indy Princess wearing her crown & cape.
HalloweenWe went trick or treating with the residents, witches hats, bat capes, the a jack-o-lantern to keep the evil spirits away and how interested were the residents to learn a little of the origin of Halloween, a fun day was had by all.
Special Visits This month Alexandra Lodge residents were delighted to have a visit from Paula & Gypsey (long haired belgian shepherd) and Paula’s son Zack 4yrs. The Cottage also had a special visit from Jennifer & Jessie (staffordshire terrier) and Jennifer’s granddaughter Madison 3yrs. WelcomeSandy George
Wecome back
Gayle Virgo, Gayle was part of our Team some time back. As she has now retired she has returned with much loved Jamie, Belle and a new addition Hugo (Pappillons). All beautifully trained by Gayle as she is an instructor at the G.C.D.T. Club in agility and obedience. Gayle’s flat-mate also enjoys coming along giving a hand and meeting the folk.
Welcome back RoseLovely to have you back on deck after your visit to England for three months.
Also to DagmarShe has just returned from a wonderful trip to Europe.
My Sincere Thanks
To my Volunteers and their dogs who are to be admired for their outstanding contribution to community well being.
A letter receivedWe feel privileged to have Yvonne and her troupe of volunteers & their talented dogs as part of our diversional therapy program. They come on a regular basis to visit the residents. It is magical to see each resident’s face light up as the pets arrive and go through their tricks. The residents confined to bed can also participate as the dogs are taken to the rooms for them to pat/or cuddle. The benefits are also on going after the visit as there is much reminiscing about memories of their own pets and what they did while they were here. We hope Yvonne will continue to be part of our program for many years to come.
Lou Kratzmeier’s GenerosityOur dear Lou who supported Pet’s For Therapy for many years as a volunteer. The proceeds from his estate were distributed to the Animal Welfare League, Blue Nurses and the Salvation Army. Representatives from each charity attended and the local press. Afternoon tea followed at the Salvo shop at Burleigh Heads where a plaque in his memory will hang.
Special Note
Of thanks to all involved in our program and your support in this most worthy cause, looking forward to our Springtime Theme. |

What a busy, busy month with so many memorable occasions to celebrate and share with our residents of the facilities we visit, our volunteers and our supporters. This Months visits included:-

One such letter this month was from Steven Ciobo MP (Federal Member for Moncrief) and a phone call from Belinda Worthington of the special force Mounted Police in Brisbane saying how much our web site had inspired her to visit the aged and children with special needs. Belinda was part of the guard of honour for the young policeman who was so needlessly killed in the line of duty.

Avica LuncheonSunday 29th July at 11:00am
Highland PiperMy mother was always saying she wanted a highland piper to play at her funeral. I thought to myself why wait until she dies. Mum was in a nursing home in Sunbury Victoria so with approval of the nursing staff arrangements were made. On the big day the Piper arrived with his brother who always accompanied him on the organ, honestly it was sensational, the sound of the pipes skirling through the hallways. I said to mum, “can you hear the pipes mum?” she said “Oh aye” and I said they are playing for you and the tears ran down her face. I had never seen so many bandaged feet tapping to the wonderful sound of those “Highland Pipes”. Mum was 86 - What a lady. Yes Yvonne I know a little of how you feel when you visit with those old lovelies, to bring a smile to their faces. Love as always, to you and little “Misty”………………Dot Forbes |

Mother’s Day celebrationsBegan at the Carrara Community Centre with the delightful Multicultural Society. Some may have had language problems with me but not so our canine friends, they brought smiles, joy and much laughter. Our Volunteers were greeted with a delicious morning tea (many thanks) and we were invited three separate days so that each busload would get a visit. Hillview HouseAlso a Mother’s Day theme which the guys enjoyed just as much as the ladies, especially when George (Jack Russell) was persuaded to wear pink for the occasion, as all the girl doggies were in pink. Lady Small HavenWhat a wonderful turn out for Mother’s Day in your lovely auditorium and thank you staff for bringing along so many residents especially from high care. Who’s Who in QueenslandAnother surprise this month, we are featured in the journal launched on the 25th May. I haven’t seen it yet but there was a small piece in the Weekend Bulletin, it reads in part that I believe service is its own reward. My volunteer work in the community is inspired by the joy and love we see in the faces of the elderly residents who at times feel lost and forgotten. Relaxed ListeningPlease go to our website and listen to the Frozen Time CD, ambient calming music (we all need). Relaxed listening for aged Care facilities. PETS FOR THERAPY NEWSLETTER FOR MAY 2005
Another busy, busy month with more and more requests to visit new venues, certainly keeping us on our toes. Our thoughts this month were with Ricki and Zumba, as Zumba had to endure surgery and then an extended stay at the Vet, our prayers were answered and she is up and about: again, we all look forward to her complete recovery. Zumba is a seven year old Rhodesian Ridgevack and is much loved by us all and especially the residents of the homes she visits, she is most affectionate and intelligent. Geotge our little Jack Russell Terrier celebrated his 2nd birthday with the folk at. Marana Gardens Nursing Home.
In September 2003 we were invited to share Brittany Anderson's 13th birthday at, a class, for children with special- needs at Coombabar primary school. The children were delighted with the performance the dogs put on for them and we all became friends. Brittany especially has written often and sent drawings of her little poodle Pepsi.
We were honored when Brittany's Mother called to ask us to attend the celebration of Brittany's :life on the 23rd May and of course the dogs were all invited and I must say all very well behaved. We are the richer for having known Brittany and her class mates, they touched our hearts in a very special way and we have memories of a very special and brave girl. Monty (Whippet) our special, care dog has gone to his new owner and I believe doing very well, I am sure Cyn-D will keep us posted, we all became very attached to Monty and will miss him.
Thank's so much for all the congratulations re. the car, certainly made life easier already, Dieter took a photo for the web site so that you can all see it, thanks Dieter and thanks once again for your web-service, one of these days I will have a computer and will lessen your load.
Once again my sincere thanks for all the Volunteer's dedication, a great team.
The following Little verse is for all our volunteers who do such a marvelous job:- V - Valuable is the work you do O - Outstanding is how you always come through U - Untiring in your efforts throughout the year E - Eager to reach your every goal-

I'm currently training a dog for Animal Assisted Therapy Australia ( http://www.therapydogs.org.au). Nicole Hargreaves, who virtually IS the organisation, posted a request for assistance from an experience obedience trainer on a positive training discussion list I belong to. She wanted someone to take a suitable dog to near trial standard in obedience plus teach it other useful behaviours before she put the finishing touches on and placed it with a disabled person. It sounded like a wonderful challenge that would improve my training skills, and I also thought that a second dog would provide much-needed companionship to my young Border Collie BeeCee. The handler Nicole has in mind for this dog has multiple sclerosis and is in a wheel chair. She needs a dog that can retrieve a wide range of objects, such as the TV remote, mobile phone, and anything else she drops, as well as open and close doors and tug her socks off. In addition, the dog has to heel flawlessly beside a wheel chair and NEVER cross in front of the chair. Nicole prefers to use Springer or Brittany Spaniels as assistance dogs. However, this handler is unable to do any grooming, so Nicole decided to look for a Whippet to train for her. There are only just over 100 Whippets registered in Queensland, so we were very fortunate to almost immediately find one with a good temperament, in the right age range (1-2 years), who was looking for a new home. Monte was previously trained at Gold Coast Dog Obedience Training Club through Canine Companion Classes 1 and 2 by his first owner, so he had an excellent start on what he would need to know. Monte has been with me since February 11, and will stay for a total of two to three months. He and BeeCee get on wonderfully, and will both miss each other when he moves on. I am very pleased with Monte's progress thus far. He's a gentle soul, so pulling on lead almost isn't in his repertoire. What a change from BeeCee! But retrieve isn't natural for him at all, so we've had to build it up in very small steps. He's now tugging gently on sock toes and learning to tug on a door pull, and his obedience is coming along well. He's good in public, having attended Pilates and aerobics classes, been to my office, participated in Pets for Therapy visits to nursing homes, and helped celebrate a birthday at Sunday brunch at Domani's in Main Beach. I'm enjoying learning to deal with a very different type of dog than my Borders. Whippets are not supposed to be the easiest dogs to train, but with positive methods I'm finding that he learns pretty well. Cyn D. Fisher
