SHOW TIME

What a fun month we have all had sharing happy memories of days when sample bags were just that and free, clowns, merry go rounds, cupi dolls, fairyfloss, the grand parade, and sheep dog trials.
Much laughter when the audience thought the sheep might not make it to the corral alive when Misty rounded up the sheep.
Our theme was also enjoyed in a lovely garden setting on a perfect spring morning at Marana Gardens ,everyone welcomed Leonie and Max a Million  ( Bichon Frize) back after a short break , Max as always wore a big smile and a waggily tail when greeted by the residents.

ROARING 20’s

At St James Park ,
What a great effort to dress up for the occasion , not only by the staff and residents , our team members and their dogs were a great hit , dear Sue in high care was elated when we entered her room and we were touched by the care and emotion shown by the staff members when Sue responded so readily with a lovely smile and pats for our doggies.
A fun morning was had by all

MEXICAN THEME

At Oz Care Day Respite Burleigh
Again we were amazed at the great effort to make a fun theme for their clients , we all joined in dressing ourselves and dogs to join in the fun , Mexican music , food, etc and boy did we have a pleasant morning .

We are all saddened by the passing of a dear girl , she was part of our Pets for Therapy Team with Ricki  and a pal for Pheonix.

ISSUE 33 - Volunteers Newsletter - July 2009

HI EVERYONE
Halfway through the year already and our 1st visit for the month was to Marana Gardens  on a glorious  (winter ? ) morning  out in the sunshine with all the residents and staff.
Time surely passed quickly having so much fun carrying on our Queenslands 150th Celebrations and to top off the morning the residents were delighted to cuddle Carolyne’s fluffy little poodle puppies, the looks on the residents and staff faces said it all.
Always a great attendance to our visits and to feel the love and see the laughter on the dear faces , the staff always so helpful assisting  with wheelchairs and day beds etc. on the days we visit.

FEEDBACK
From Katrina D/T at Oz Care Day Respite Burleigh.

We had a great surprise on Monday the 13th July when Yvonne & Misty brought the Pets for Therapy Team to our center.
Yvonne decided to adopt our Cowboys & Indian  theme , which we had this year for American Independence Day theme.
Yvonne’s team were either dressed as Cowboys or Indians and had their dogs in coats, collars and head bands of feathers and finery.
They went to a lot of effort  for a very authentic look.
Yvonne even had a small Tee-Pee as an added effect.
Little Pappy felt right at home in there.
Pappy’s  owner Jeanette was the best Indian on the day with great outfit complete with suede coat, fur boots and a very decorative totem pole.  Jeanette’s sister Lorraine also in an authentic Indian outfit and photographer on the day took over 100 photo’s.The Clients loved the show and really appreciated everyone dressing up for them We got some great photo’s it is always a pleasure to have “Pets for Therapy “ at our Centre.Yvonne does an incredible job and gives a quality show every time .
We look forward to seeing them all again soon.
Thank you for a great Pow-Wow

Katrina

The Merry Month of May

May Day

Began at Cypress gardens where we reminisced as May day came along each year many of us used to dance around the May Pole, in Europe they used garlands of  flowers , here in Australia we had coloured ribbons , memories of those days bought back lovely memories and smiles of the joy of those days gone by , we all agreed it would be great to see the tradition introduced back  in the primary schools today.

Mothers Day Celebrations

Our Mothers Day theme delighted the residents as we all donned pink ribbons, even the boy dogs were enticed to wear pink bows in honour of our precious Mothers.
Misty brought back memories of the hills hoist as she handed me the washing from a basket and then the pegs so that I could hang up the washing, the gents had a laugh also and enjoyed the poetry remembering Mothers Cookie Jar, her kitchen and garden
M-O-T-H-E-R
“M ”is for the million things she gave me
Ö    means only that she is growing old
“T ”is for the tears she shed to save me
“H ”is for the heart of purest gold
Ë” is for the eyes with love light shining
“R” means right , and right she will always be
Put them all together they spell  “MOTHER”
A word that means the world to me

Another special lady Jean who is visually impaired is to be commended for the warm rugs she knits for the Animal Welfare League.

All of the people we visit are special and many touch our hearts as we have one on one interaction visiting them in their rooms, their faces light up when we arrive with a dog in the doorway.

Tricks Tricks Tricks

Why teach dogs tricks?  There are many reasons, to improve your rapport with your dog and to improve your skill as a trainer and your dogs desire to pay attention to you and work with you, to give mental stimulation which is as important as physical exercise.  Most dogs love trick training.  Good you just earned a reward.

The Puppy Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king sized bed is soft and deep,
I sleep right in the center groove,
My human being can hardly move,
I’ve trapped her legs, she’s tucked in tight,
And here is where I pass the night,
No one disturbs me or dares intrude,
Till morning comes and I want food,
She wakes up quickly
I have sharp teeth,
I’m a puppy, don’t you see?
For the mornings here and it’s time to play,
I always seem to get my way,
So thank you Lord for giving me,
This human person that I see,
The one who hugs and holds me tight,
And shares her bed with me at night!

ISSUE 29 - Volunteers Newsletter - March 2009

Spreading smiles laughter and love is our Motto.  We certainly started the month doing just that with 12 of our fabulous volunteers and their canine companions on stage at the Marriot Courtyard Hotel Surfers Paradise.

Cultural Exchange

As in previous years we were once again invited to present a seminar of our contribution to the Gold Coast Community to the visiting Japanese Study Tour Group through the QUT School of Nursing.  They assure me that our presentation is the highlight of their visit, with much interaction and laughter with our volunteers and doggies at the conclusion and plenty of photos to take back to Japan.  A wonderful exchange of cultures organized through QUT handshake.

Qld Day

Peta-Kaye Croft MP, Member for Broadwater, called for nominations for the Broadwater Electorate and asked locals to nominate those who dedicate their time and effort as volunteers in our community.

The award presentations and afternoon tea were held at the Paradise Point Community Hall on Qld Day and we were invited to attend and bring along 4 guests, Rosemary and Glen from G.C. Boarding Kennels (staunch supporters of PFT), Debbie (volunteer, Kirra’s mum) and Jan Parker (volunteer) came along for support on the day.  Of course there is no show without Misty, when we were congratulated on stage and received our awards Misty shook hands with the acting Superintendant of Police which brought much laughter.

We were enthralled at the amount of selfless volunteers in our local community who give their time to enrich the lives of others, many with disabilities themselves.  This is a shining example of what helps to make the Gold Coast a better society.

Our Annual Luncheon

A day which gives me a chance to say thank you to our volunteers, sponsors and many helpers behind the scenes for their dedication and assistance to keep this wonderful community endeavour afloat.  The Avica Resort once again excelled, 42 sat down to lunch in a lovely room opening onto the glorious gardens with peacocks strutting about, they entertained our little one year old guest, Abyhigail no end.  Delicious food, great company and atmosphere, Kathy and the catering staff never fail to join in, what more could we ask.  The presentation this year of key rings and book marks with our doggies photos and logo were well received and I must thank Karen Chep at Chep Print Ashmore for her patience and hours of work to get them ready

Surfers Paradise Vet Surgery

To Bronwyn and staff our thanks once again for working overtime to fill the very generous gift bags which everyone received at the luncheon, and to your suppliers for their generosity of wonderful goodies for our canine volunteers.  Your on-going support after so many years is truly appreciated.

Special Tricks Class

G.C.D.O.T. Club’s chief instructor Cyn-D kindly offered to take a class in place of our usual get-together at Overell Park on a Monday evening and what great response she had.  Cyn-D has won many titles with her border collies and also successfully trains assistance dogs to help the visually impaired and disabled.  She has a fresh approach to free shaping, luring, molding, targeting and prompting.  We all enjoyed the class and I’m sure our dogs had an inspiring evening.  Thank you Cyn-D for giving us your valuable time.

Somerville Funerals

Invited us to join them at their Nerang chapel for a cupcake afternoon tea party.  We are so proud to say that Somerville Funerals sponsor Pets For Therapy and twice a year they say thank you to our volunteers, sponsors and Diversional Therapists who work so hard throughout the year, bringing joy in the facilities we visit.  Jenny’s cup cakes were to die for (excuse the pun).  Misty’s outfits provided by Posh Pets Marina Mirage would have been the envy of all the girl dogs and she was thrilled with her gift of (Chewnell No 5 France) soft toy from Jenny.  Sue-Ella captured precious memories of pets, making beautiful pieces of jewellery in silver paw prints etc.  Trevor played guitar as we watched memories of Pets For Therapy going back many years.  Eukanuba and Royal Canin very kindly provided the door prizes and a fun afternoon was had by all who attended.  Many thanks to Jenny and the Somerville Staff.

May the last breath of summer - a wonderful time to be spreading a little cheer through the facilities we visit.

M is for Mothers Day

To honour all the precious Mothers we all wore lovely pink bows, even the doggies, which brought smiles to the faces of the residents as they watched the dogs go through their paces with staff and visitors and after the performance what a special time to meet and interact with both dogs and volunteers.

Mothers Day Service at Allambe

Was well attended again this year, a lovely time to reflect and remember our dear Mothers.  Lovely light speeches, young singers and harpist made the morning very sincere and followed by a delicious morning tea.

Million Paws Walk

Sunday 18th at Mt Tamborine, on a very chilly morning in the crisp mountain air, however we soon warmed up on the 5 km walk.  Jeanette’s little granddaughter never stopped smiling at the sight of all the animals of all shapes and sizes.  Again this year we received the award for the best presented team and I would like to thank all who participated, we had a great roll-up to help make the day perfect and after the festivities we relaxed in the picnic grounds to a well earned lunch.  I must admit the last hill beat me and I reluctantly accepted a lift in the pet ambulance.

Diversional Therapists Awareness Week

Was held at the Cascade Gardens again this year and what a perfect setting by the river under the trees on a warm autumn day, enjoying morning tea and then lunch served by the D/T’s, Carers and Volunteers.  I was so impressed by the effort by everyone to set out deck chairs, tables, and to assemble their folk for an outing such as this day so capably organized by Katrina D/T at Oz Care Day Respite Burleigh Heads.  A guitarist mingled and sang along, the Town Cryer was in great demand for photos and we were delighted to be invited with our canine companions to greet our dear friends and have a chat.  A lovely day was enjoyed by all who attended.

Birthdays

George our dear jack russell celebrated his 5th birthday at Hillview House Ashmore with Pat (D/T) and five other residents (one dear lady 103 years) all having birthdays (Gemini’s), all came out on a chilly morning to see our dogs entertain, they all donned party hats and lei’s and the residents joined in to sing happy birthday and a fun morning was had by all.  Thanks Pat for the lovely morning tea.

OzCare Day Respite at Runaway Bay also had a special day to farewell Carol who also celebrated her birthday and shared it with staff members and clients birthdays all these Gemini’s seem to be found helping others, the chef also having a birthday and what a delicious morning tea she presented us with, we felt really spoilt, thanks so much.Lovely to see Carol following her dream, have a wonderful time Carol you deserve it.Many are all the richer for having known you.

St James Park Care

We were made so welcome as Misty showed off her skills and little Ambra played the piano, danced and sang, the audience were sure she was playing waltzingmatilda which she has been practicing for the Australia Day celebrations.Janet joined us for the first time and was most impressed.

Welcome

Also to Amanda and Oswold (7 year old beagle).

And to Brian at Toms Pet Food and Garden supplies at Nerang for your support and sponsorship.

Many Thanks

Once again to everyone who contributes time and energy to this wonderful community service, many behind the scenes.I’m sure you feel as I do that we get back so much more than we give.We pass this way only once and if we can give a little back to society it is everything and so much appreciated by the folk we visit.

ISSUE 20 - Volunteers Newsletter - February - April    2008

Multicultural

What an exciting way to start the month with so much interest in our program from overseas students, five Japanese girls and one from Mexico all studying here at Griffith University.

They were so delighted to join us on our training nights at Overell Park and then were made so welcome by Ann the Diversional Therapist at Cypress Gardens Nursing Home, observing our demonstration with the dogs and then meeting the residents, all language barriers forgotten and they had so much fun watching the dogs do their tricks.

Two Chinese girls Jun and Lee also came along to our classes and then joined us at The Homestead Merrimac where they were made most welcome and were thrilled to help with the props and meet the residents.

Four of our grade 11 students from A B Patterson College Arundel joined us at Masonic Care Arundel, an umbilical cord to the outside world for the residents who were most interested to chat to the girls about their life and studies.

The girls of course are all dog lovers and enjoyed meeting our canine companions and to see the joy and love they bring to the residents.

Bee Cee has many special skills and tricks which delight the audience, a good morning sharing smiles, laughter and love with so many special people.

The whole team rallied and contributed their time and effort so selflessly to visit the folk in their rooms enjoying the pats and cuddles and a quiet chat to the volunteers.

Goodbye & Goodluck

To our dear Rose who devoted so much of her time to others i.e. hospital visits and always on hand to be part of Pets For Therapy, she is so bright and bubbly and loved by all, especially the dogs.  A real dog lover.
Grafton will be fortunate to have you and we will keep in touch.

Special Thanks

To all who contributed to our visits, Leonie and Max-a-Million at a very busy time packing up house and relocating and you still found time to bring Max along to entertain on the piano which delights the audience.

Also to the staff for bringing along so many residents especially from high care, I know it is quite a task but well worth the effort when you see their faces light up in response to Misty's antics and then to get a pat and cuddle.

We are all looking forward to the month of May with lots of fun things happening to report next newsletter.

Letter from volunteer Betty

George my Jack Russell, and I started visiting with Pets for Therapy in April 2005.  George loves all the people and would rather give them kisses than do tricks.  No matter how long it has been since he visited a home he remembers, as soon as we turn into the street and can’t wait to get out of the car to say hello to everyone.  He has been very good with people who have not spoken for some time, his love has brought them out of their silence and we have had some surprising conversations.  He adores the other dogs especially Misty, she is not always so thrilled with his kisses.

From Paula and Zak

I first found out about Pets For Therapy when searching for sites that offered information about services involving animal assistance therapy.  The website description of the service impressed me so much I made contact with Yvonne and since being accepted as a volunteer have found both the service and the people (Yvonne, the team of people and dogs) to exceed my initial expectations.  I believe my son Zak, dog Gypsy and myself have all got something out of the visits to the centres and training provided.  I love to see the residents being entertained by and interacting with our dogs and Zak loves to not only watch the show too but gets a kick out of being included, Thanks Yvonne.

ISSUE 18 - Volunteers Newsletter - The month of January

Happy New Year

I sincerely hope that 2008 will be a joyous and peaceful year for us all.

As we will resume our visits in February I thought it would be nice to hear from our wonderful volunteers their views and experiences since coming along as a team member of "Pets For Therapy".  We also have a doggie's perspective.

Cyn D. Fisher

Pets For Therapy has provided me with a excellent opportunity to socialise my dogs with large numbers of people including the type of people dogs don't always get to meet (old, infirmed, in wheelchairs, those who move strangely).  When Bee Cee was a baby I decided to follow Ian Dunbar's advice to introduce your puppy to 100 people in the first month you have it, I passed 100 in less than 2 weeks, thanks in part to PFT visits, and the clients at Burleigh Respite were absolutely thrilled to meet a cute fluffy baby Border Collie.  The service dog trainees I've had (Monte, Wookie, Dizzy) also benefited from the chance to meet lots of residents and practice performing their task work in public.  It's gratifying when residents enjoy the show and marvel at what a well-trained dog can do.  I've also enjoyed getting to know Yvonne and the other volunteers - they are really great people.

Julie-Anne

I met Yvonne (and at that time JoJo) through my work at an Aged Care facility.  At the time I acquired a two year old poodle, who had never been walked on a lead, was spoilt rotten in all the wrong ways, had never been trained in anyway. Yvonne said bring him along to training, at first she thought, Oh my goodness what have we here, but with Yvonne's knowledge of dogs and perseverance my Charlie Brown soon was visiting the homes with other dogs.  Being involved with Pets For Therapy and Yvonne has brought about many smiles and some times a little tear...we have lost both 2 legged and 4 legged friends but one thing remains the same..... the outstanding welcome and happiness Yvonne and her troupe of volunteers bring to the community.

Debbie Taplin

For Kirra and I to become a member of the Pets For Therapy team gave us a chance to get out and about together and show others just what we were made of, but more importantly it gave me a chance to share our good fortune of good health and happiness with others who it would seem are no longer at their best.  As a team we were able to bring smiles and happy memories to many of the people we visited and performed for.  Most people appreciated the time and effort we all put in to training our dogs so that they too are highly acceptable members of our society where unfortunately a lot of care and attention to the needs of others has gone by the wayside.  I have heard many wonderful stories of other peoples dogs and other animal antics and although the occasional tear has sprung, all in all they were happy tears, happy memories.  People from all walks of life have terrific stories to tell about their old mates, the dogs that have been in their lives.  I hope I can continue my "giving" for many years to come.

Sandy George

I would like to thank Yvonne & Misty for such a warm welcome to her fun and friendly group of volunteers.  It has only been a short few months, which I have enjoyed so much.  The dedication and fun ideas Yvonne comes up with to entertain the aged folk has been a pleasure to participate in.  Hopefully my Jack Russell Zac will be able to accompany me and light up some dear faces this year.

Sonja Domlatil

What does PFT stand for Pets (are the best) For (heartfelt) Therapy.  When I joined PFT it was simply, to give my dog Ambra something worthwhile to do.  Has it ever been just that?  I get time to spend not only with my dog but with other like-minded people!  It does not take much to be a PFT person - you simply need to love dogs and to like people, what is so hard about that?  Sometimes when it all seems to get too much, I just have to think of the people we are visiting and suddenly a smile spreads over my face and my world is once again right.  Would it not be selfish not to share your fortune of a four-legged companion who does never judge and is always so eager to please?  If anyone has ever seen the interaction taking place between the human and the canine species, you will know exactly what I am talking about!  I joined PFT, because I wanted to do something worthwhile together with my dog and it has been everything and more for my best friend and me.  Friendships have been established and I just have to watch the joy in the eyes of the people we visit to know I am the fortunate member of a very special bunch of people, who do a great job for another group of very special members of the community.

Ricki & Zumba

I am often asked why I do Pets For Therapy.  My answer is always the same- if I was in a nursing home I would love someone to bring me a dog to pat, that is why I do it.  It makes you feel good to bring a little bit of joy to someone else in life.

Missy & Muffin

Some time back my little dog Muffin and I were invited to join the Pets For Therapy program.  Every week these calm and friendly dogs give many people young and old, the chance to stroke and talk to them.  The dogs perform basic obedience tricks and agility.  How cute they even dress up for special occasions like St Patrick’s Day, Easter, Halloween etc. each month a new theme.

Huey - Basenji X Foxie (the handsome one)

My first training night.
Mum had talked to me about joining the Pets For Therapy team, as she was already involved and that was one of her reasons for rescuing me, she tempted me saying there were cute little females that go along, so being the young rascal I am, even though I don't have the equipment any more, I went along with her to training on a Monday arvo and mate I can tell you she was right.  Couldn't believe my eyes, my nose was in overdrive as were my legs - I was in heaven, doggie mates everywhere, all shapes and sizes and Mum was right, there were some cute females, I was so excited I made a right dick of myself to the point Mum had to put me in the car and ooohhhh what a din I kicked up, but she didn't give in and that’s where I stayed for my first training night - in the car.  Its all good Mum has persevered with me and I'm not the dick I used to be (little pun there readers) I'm happy to be a part of an important community service.  I get to meet some lovely wrinkly humans and some not so lovely wrinkly humans, but all in all " it's a dogs life " woof woof.

ISSUE 17 - Volunteers Newsletter - The month of December

What a delightful way to bring the year to an end sharing the festive season with so many dear friends at the Gold Coast facilities.

CHRISTMAS SLEIGH

Our doggies enjoyed the sleigh ride as we all entered the spirit with our little reindeer, jingle bells and carols.

GIFT GIVING
Our gift giving is always so special, each gift and bonbon is lovingly hand made by Dagmar (a real treasure) the smiles and thank-yous say it all, even the odd tear here and there.  This year we distributed 1200 gifts with the help of our wonderful volunteers who give their time at this busy time of year.  Zack 4yrs and Madison 3 yrs delighted the residents as they helped give out the gifts, enjoying the antics of the dogs.

Katrina welcomed Cyn-D and Bee Cee and what a lovely visit they had, the clients were tickled to receive their gifts from PETS FOR THERAPY.
Bee Cee ran through her many tricks including closing a drawer, taking off socks, fetching the lead, saying prayers, sleeping, beg, bow, walk backwards, peek-a-boo, weave between legs, spin etc.
The clients were a very switched on group and had many questions so they talked about agility training, tracking, cadavar dogs and service dogs, so a most enjoyable morning was had by all attended including staff at the centre, Katrina, Cyn-D and Bee Cee.

Sponsorship

SOMERVILLE FUNERALS location Supervisor Jenny Crewes held a Christmas party for our volunteers and Diversional Therapists to announce their sponsorship of Pets For Therapy.  A lovely afternoon which we all enjoyed immensely and we were touched by Jenny's words when she said that she regularly has contact with the Nursing Homes, Respite Centres and Retirement Villages that we visit and the feedback she receives about the joy and smiles that our team of volunteers bring, both canine and human alike is of the highest order.
The esteem and affection with which we are held is genuine and immense.
You really do make a difference in the lives of others.

Welcome back Rose

Lovely to have you back on deck after your visit to England for three months.

Also to Dagmar

She has just returned from a wonderful trip to Europe.
Before she went away she put together 1200 gift boxes and bonbon’s for our Christmas giving, which begins half way through November as we would not be able to get around to everyone if we did not start early.

My Sincere Thanks

To my Volunteers and their dogs who are to be admired for their outstanding contribution to community well being.

A letter received

We feel privileged to have Yvonne and her troupe of volunteers & their talented dogs as part of our diversional therapy program.  They come on a regular basis to visit the residents.  It is magical to see each resident’s face light up as the pets arrive and go through their tricks.  The residents confined to bed can also participate as the dogs are taken to the rooms for them to pat/or cuddle.  The benefits are also on going after the visit as there is much reminiscing about memories of their own pets and what they did while they were here.  We hope Yvonne will continue to be part of our program for many years to come.

Lou Kratzmeier’s Generosity

Our dear Lou who supported Pet’s For Therapy for many years as a volunteer.

The proceeds from his estate were distributed to the Animal Welfare League, Blue Nurses and the Salvation Army.

Representatives from each charity attended and the local press.  Afternoon tea followed at the Salvo shop at Burleigh Heads where a plaque in his memory will hang.

Special Note

Of thanks to all involved in our program and your support in this most worthy cause, looking forward to our Springtime Theme.

103rd Birthday

One of the highlights of our month being invited to Heather’s special day at The Homestead.
What an inspiration to join this lovely lady and to see her enjoying her day surrounded by other residents, staff, family and friends and of course our “Pets For Therapy” team wearing party hats and lei’s and joining in this momentous occasion.
Heather loves dogs and I noticed she was so happy when snapped by the Channel 9 crew while Kirra (Debbie’s gentle German Shepherd) was wishing her a happy birthday.

Seniors Week

We kicked up our heels when we were invited along to share the festivities as Alzheimer’s Australia Gold Coast turned the Carrara Community Centre into a mini-show for their clients, friends and families.  There was fairy floss, toffee apples, a side show alley, line dancing, whip cracking, baby animals, arts and crafts.
Elaine and all involved excelled in putting on a wonderful day and they are to be congratulated for their dedication and skills.
Pappy joined in the country theme wearing her akubra hat and bandana along with Jeanette.  Huey and Robyn looked great in their dry-as-a-bone’s.  Misty sat on the tucker-box sporting her denim shirt and cork hat, and then joined in the line dancing and rounded up the Marino sheep.
Then to top it off we all enjoyed billy-tea and a sausage sizzle, what a fun day we all had.

Fashion Parade at The Cottage Domain

As seen on T.V. must have outfits for any pooch, Max-a-Million featuring the latest all weather coat for outdoors with pockets to carry a snack and Mum Leoni’s keys.  Jennifer and Jessie wearing perfectly coordinated rain-wear.  Huey showing his true-blue Aussie outfit complete with slouch hat.  Misty looking resplendent in sequined after five wear, and Max finally showing off his tuxedo made by his loving grandmother for when he plays the piano, very formal featuring black collar, lapels, bow tie and white under shirt.  A show with a difference certainly brought smiles and laughter to the faces of our dear residents and staff and I am sure brightened up their day

Birthday Lunch

At The Domain we celebrated three of our team members birthdays, Robyn, Leoni and Jeanette, in a lovely relaxed atmosphere.  Many Happy Returns.

Heartfelt Condolences

To our dear Robyn and Mia for the sudden loss of Robyn’s mother.  Even though Robyn has moved to Burringbar in NSW she still joins us with Mia (Border Collie) whenever possible and has been a staunch supporter of Pets For Therapy over many years.

Hugs

It’s wondrous what a hug can do,
A hug can cheer you when you’re blue.
A hug can say I love you so or gee I hate to see you go,
A hug is welcome back again,
And great to see you or where have you been,
A hug can soothe a small child’s pain,
And bring a rainbow after rain.

The hug! There’s just no doubt about it,
We scarcely could survive without it,
A hug delights and warms and charms,
It must be why God gave us arms.

Hugs are great for fathers and mothers,
Sweet for sisters, as well for brothers,
And chances are some favorite aunts,
Love them more than potted plants.

Kittens crave them, puppies love them,
Heads of state are not above them,
A hug can break the language barrier,
And make the dullest day seem merrier.

No need to fret about the store of them,
The more you give, the more there are of them.

So stretch your arms without delay,
AND GIVE SOMEONE A HUG TODAY.

Special Note

Of thanks to all involved in our program and your support in this most worthy cause, looking forward to our Springtime Theme.

Letters and Phone Calls

Over the years I have received many heart-warming letters of appreciation of our dedication and commitment to the community.

One such letter this month was from Steven Ciobo MP (Federal Member for Moncrief) and a phone call from Belinda Worthington of the special force Mounted Police in Brisbane saying how much our web site had inspired her to visit the aged and children with special needs.  Belinda was part of the guard of honour for the young policeman who was so needlessly killed in the line of duty.

A Wonderful Cultural Exchange

Some years ago I met Dr Robert Thornton (Senior Lecturer at QUT) he was most interested in our Pets For Therapy program and invited us to host and demonstrate Pets For Therapy in action to the QUT / Seishen Hospital Study Tour (Japanese student nurses) from the Hospital College.
This is the 5th year we have been invited to the Mariott Courtyard Hotel Gold Coast.
We had 11 dogs on stage with their handlers and then it was hands on time with the students taking photo’s, the dogs certainly break the language barrier and a fun time was had by all. They were so much appreciated, many thanks.

Our Annual Luncheon at Avica Resort

As always, great venue, great people, great food, great vibes. From all the feedback it seems our day just gets better and better.

A day to thank our Volunteers, Sponsors and all who support and believe so much in our cause after 18 years of true commitment and dedication.

My thanks to Surfers Paradise Vet Surgery for their contribution to the luncheon of all the lovely goodie bags for the doggie volunteers – can’t forget the kids and to Dagmar for having all the Christmas Bon Bon’s and gift boxes made already in time for Christmas giving in November.

Congratulations

To our raffle winner Vivienne and to the Volunteer from Gold Coast Homestead for winning the lucky door prize of (Little Misty)

To Katrina from Oz Care Day Respite Burleigh on becoming a new grandmother to little Finn Oliver, a darling baby boy for Erica, Katrina’s daughter (not a puppy).

Many Thanks

To Anne Fields for your generous donation of wooly puppies, you have put so much time and effort into them and they are just gorgeous.

Lions Haven for the lovely warm rugs, they will be so much appreciated.

Welcome

To Jennifer, her granddaughter Madison (much loved by the residents) and Jessie (female Staffy 10 years)

The Ode to Volunteers

Many will be shocked to find,
When the day of judgement nears,
That there's a special place in heaven,
Set aside for volunteers

Furnished with big recliners,
Satin Cushions and footstools,
Where there's no committee chairman,
No group leaders or car pools

Telephone lists will be outlawed,
But a finger snap will bring,
Cool drinks and gourmet dinners,
And rare treats fit for a king

You ask who'll serve these privileged few,
And work for all their worth?
Why, all those who reaped the benefits,
And not once volunteered on earth

    Sunday 29th July at 11:00am
Come along and meet the wonderful people involved in “Pets For Therapy”
    Great food & Great company.

    Highland Piper

My mother was always saying she wanted a highland piper to play at her funeral.  I thought to myself why wait until she dies.  Mum was in a nursing home in Sunbury Victoria so with approval of the nursing staff arrangements were made.  On the big day the Piper arrived with his brother who always accompanied him on the organ, honestly it was sensational, the sound of the pipes skirling through the hallways.  I said to mum, “can you hear the pipes mum?” she said “Oh aye” and I said they are playing for you and the tears ran down her face.  I had never seen so many bandaged feet tapping to the wonderful sound of those “Highland Pipes”.  Mum was 86 - What a lady.

Yes Yvonne I know a little of how you feel when you visit with those old lovelies, to bring a smile to their faces.

Love as always, to you and little “Misty”………………Dot Forbes

ISSUE 11 - Volunteers Newsletter - The merry merry month of May

The merry merry month of May

What a busy month we have had and I promised Misty and myself that we would take things easy this year, it seems nigh impossible with so many exciting events to attend and facilities looking forward to our visits.

Mother’s Day celebrations

Began at the Carrara Community Centre with the delightful Multicultural Society.  Some may have had language problems with me but not so our canine friends, they brought smiles, joy and much laughter.  Our Volunteers were greeted with a delicious morning tea (many thanks) and we were invited three separate days so that each busload would get a visit.

Hillview House

Also a Mother’s Day theme which the guys enjoyed just as much as the ladies, especially when George (Jack Russell) was persuaded to wear pink for the occasion, as all the girl doggies were in pink.

Lady Small Haven

What a wonderful turn out for Mother’s Day in your lovely auditorium and thank you staff for bringing along so many residents especially from high care.  I know you were thrilled with their response to the music and Misty's performance.  Robyn and I also had a great morning.

Mother’s Day raffle

Sylvia from Orchid House Earle Haven very kindly donated the basket and Kevin from Kevin's Florist Surfers Paradise filled the basket.  Thank you both so much and to all our volunteers who sold tickets and to all who supported us, our sincere thanks.  Congratulations to the winner Tony Gothard who bought the ticket for his wife Natushka.

Lions Haven

We all had a fun morning and the new diversional therapist Robyn Benham who had never seen us in action, was most impressed with the residents interacting with the volunteers both 2 and 4 legged.
Thank you and Julie-Anne for a nice lunch, it went down well after a warm morning.

Volunteering Extravaganza

15th May
Held at Waterways Community Centre this year and hosted by Leticia Vargus of Volunteering Gold Coast.
We were pleasantly surprised with an award for our commitment and dedication to volunteering on the Gold Coast, presented by Steven Ciobo MP and signed by The Hon John Howard MP.  Misty went up on stage with me and shook Stevens hand.
Many thanks to Robyn for helping me set up the stall, Betty & Susie, Betty & George, Jeanette and Sue.
Thanks also to Channel 9 for their coverage and for taking the trouble to show past footage of the Pets For Therapy team, especially our dear JoJo that really tugged at the heartstrings.

Picnic in the Park

16th May
Thank you Katrina for your invitation, I feel most privileged to have been a part of such a wonderful day at Cascade Gardens, under the shady trees by the river what a perfect venue.
Smiles on all the faces as Misty greeted everyone with handshakes and cuddles.
(Well done to all the organisers)

The Million Paws Walk

20th May
What a glorious hinterland we have and the walk with our canine companions in the crisp mountain air at Mt. Tamborine each year to help raise funds for the R.S.P.C.A. is exhilarating to say the least and then there is our yummy picnic lunch.

Thanks to all who joined us this year and brought along their husbands.
Congrats to John & Max a Million, they won the best look alike pair with their white hair and dark glasses.
The Pets For Therapy Team won the best-presented team. Well done everyone!!

Oz Care Runaway Bay

We always have a fun visit, this time we welcomed Loraine, Jeanete’s sister and Pappy's dressmaker.
Misty was presented with a Titans jersey (you might say that was a hint to change your team Misty)

Heaven Earth Natural Therapies

Our new Sponsor – Welcome.
Shauna & Robert Kendall sent me a lovely note and donation thanking us for our Service to the community.
The donation of cards , wrapping paper and posters featuring their art works was so well received and I thank them sincerely.
Artist Shauna's creations are inspired by her fond memories growing up on a farm surrounded by a lovable family of pets.

Who’s Who in Queensland

Another surprise this month, we are featured in the journal launched on the 25th May.  I haven’t seen it yet but there was a small piece in the Weekend Bulletin, it reads in part that I believe service is its own reward.  My volunteer work in the community is inspired by the joy and love we see in the faces of the elderly residents who at times feel lost and forgotten.

Relaxed Listening

Please go to our website and listen to the Frozen Time CD, ambient calming music (we all need).

Relaxed listening for aged Care facilities.
Dieter is donating to P.F.T. for each CD sold.

Special Thanks

to all who contribute to Pets For Therapy  - Yvonne & Misty.

ISSUE 10 - Volunteers Newsletter April 2007

Easter

Hope you all had a nice Easter as we did bringing the Easter spirit and bunnies to the facilities on the Gold Coast.

Lessons from the Easter Bunny

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.

Everyone needs a friend who is all ears.

All work and no play can make you a basket case.

A cute little tail attracts lots of attention.

Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day.

Sandbrook Assisted Care

What an exciting start to the month with our first visit to Sandbrook Assisted Care where we were made most welcome by staff and residents who were thrilled to participate in the Easter spirit.

Many residents and staff had known JoJo as the Easter bunny and I was surprised to hear the memories come flooding back of past years as they welcomed Misty, Jeanette and Pappy (Papillion) and Robyn.

Thanks Phyllis for your patience with the bunny ears as most residents wanted their photos taken with our very patient doggies.

Pimpama Nursing Home

With our team of volunteers we continued the Easter fun with Betty and George the jack russell.

Our dear friend Keith sang for us as he always has over the years (so heartwarming) and the younger residents also joined in the fun applauding as the dogs showed off their tricks.

How nice to have a young year 12 student come along with us to watch us in action.  Amanda is from Mullumbimbi High School and her assessment task is to do an independent research project. As her topic she chose to do the significance of animals on the well-being of people.

As part of this assignment she chose to observe Pets For Therapy.  One on the carers commented that she felt all warm and tingly as a result of our visit (how nice is that).

Alexandra Lodge

We were greeted most warmly by Bergit and a fun morning was had with the help of Rose and Robyn, we later visited the rooms of those residents who were unable to leave their beds and were welcomed with smiles as we left they assured us they felt much better for having a visit from our canine companions and volunteers.

Clover Cottage at the Domain

What a delight to visit.  Sandra, we finally got there and we had a most rewarding time.

Misty was in her element showing off her line dancing steps wearing her akubra hat and bandana.  Many of the residents recognized us from our visits to the lodge.  The atmosphere was so nice.

Life Care Gold Coast

Max-A-Million celebrated his sixth birthday along with three of the residents who have April birthdays, everyone joined in wearing party hats and leis, one gentleman could not resist the urge to dance to the music.

Jeanette’s mother and sister came along and were pleasantly surprised to see the folk having such a good morning of joy, laughter and love.

Multicultural Society at Carrara

We are looking forward to this visit, they all enjoy our visit and make us so welcome.

Tri-Care Labrador

Our last visit for the month is on a Saturday, which gives many of our volunteers who work all week a chance to come along with their canine companions, show off their skills and visit with the residents.

Welcome to our Team

Volunteers from Volunteering Gold Coast Robyn, Rose and Sue.

Thanks

I would like to thank most sincerely Debbie for her monthly contribution to Pets For Therapy.

Each month I receive such wonderful feedback re: our carefully and colourfully put together programs and newsletters.

A great effort from a very busy working mum, many, many thanks Debbie.

Special Thanks

For the time and effort given so selflessly by our 2 x 4 legged volunteers in our endeavour to bring a little joy, laughter and love in this sometimes sad world.

ISSUE 9 - Volunteers Newsletter March 2007

Nice to be back

We are off to a great start to our year and I must say how wonderful is to be back doing what I love most with my dear little friend Misty, bringing joy, laughter and love to so many and seeing the smiles on dear faces.

We all had a much-needed break in January & February and were welcomed back with open arms from the residents at Alexandra lodge.  To the residents it seemed forever since we had visited and they missed seeing our wonderful dogs and volunteers.

Raffles at South Tweed were also thrilled to see us, a lovely atmosphere.

Robyn and her very talented border collie, Mia came all the way from Burringbar in N.S.W. and was a great hit with everyone.

We celebrated special birthdays and then visited the folk who were unable to leave their rooms.

The date scones and tea were very much appreciated, thank you Karen and also the help from the staff with the equipment was a godsend on a very hot and humid morning.

Nerang Nursing Home

What a warm welcome from everyone, staff included, Misty was at top form showing off her new tricks and Jane's comment when taking photo's of Misty with the residents and the way they interacted with her was that the photo's were worth a million dollars, that really touched my heart and later as we were making our way along the hallway with some of the residents following and asking when we would come again, they commented that was the best morning we have had.

These are the rewards of service to the community, so very special.

St Patrick's day

(To be sure to be sure)

At Tri-Care Labrador was a fun time, our little Leprechaun was quite mischievous, while our two whippets Pharaoh & Windi, Belgian Shepherd Gypsy and Ambra, Bichon Freze were happy to show off their skills and don their green bandana's with shamrocks for the luck of the Irish as many of the residents joined in and sang when Irish eyes are smiling

The residents also enjoyed the trivia questions and many reminisced about their Irish heritage

Our special thoughts are with Roland D/T at this sad time.

Oz-Care Runaway Bay

We continued the St Patrick’s Day theme with Balloons etc. and Pappy our little Papillion made her debut, nothing fazed her and everyone enjoyed the cuddles.

A new volunteer Robyn came all the way from Mermaid on the bus to Runaway Bay and had a great time; she doesn't have a dog at the moment so she enjoyed sharing our dogs and meeting the folk.

Carol and staff always make us so welcome; the respite visitors can't help but have a lovely time there, as the girls are all so happy and friendly, good to be back girls.

Gold Coast Homestead

The Gold Coast Homestead also welcomed us, one of our volunteers Rose also gives her time at the Gold Coast Robina hospital as a volunteer and as many residents spend time in hospital they are pleased to see her again, as was the case on this visit.

Rose is always very bubbly and happy, a delight to have around as are our other volunteers and they all interact well with the residents of the homes we visit.

Training Sessions:

Come along and socialize your doggies, have some fun and enjoy the sea breezes from the broadwater.

Time:      4:30pm – 6:30pm
When:    Monday evenings
Where:   Overell Park,
Brighton Parade,Southport.

Lou

Hi to our dear volunteer Lou who has not been very well of late (you can't keep a good man down) we all send our love and the residents ask after you and miss you.

In February two letters were sent via email to the diversional therapists of all the homes and centres we visit.

I am surprised to hear that so many of you did not receive or see the correspondence.

ISSUE 5 - Volunteers Newsletter JULY 2006

Our visits this month included:

Southport Nursing Centre

Newly renovated - Great to be back as we visited the previus home for 16 years. Missy's grandmother is a resident and we celebrated Dianne's birthday. Lovely to receive a phone call thanking us for a lovely morning.

Paradise Lake

Residents smiled and giggled at our doggie fashions. George the jack russell sporting his winter woolies, Bronco's football jersey, dry-as-a-bone and akubra hat while Misty showed off her designer labels with matching accessories, bedtime wear and after five (very chic).

Marana Gardens

Lovely out in the sunshine and fresh air as the dogs showed off their tricks.

Handlers that participate in P.F.T. often use tricks to entertain the audience. There are many reasons to teach tricks.

•  To give your dog mental exercise which is just as important as physical exercise.

•  To improve rapport with your dog and your dogs desire to pay attention.

•  To improve your timing and skill as a trainer.

•  To show how smart your dog is and convince yourself and others how smart your dog is.

"Most dog's love trick training"

QUT School of Nursing

On July 4 th at the Marriot Courtyard Hotel we held our second demonstration of P.F.T. in action to 40 Japanese nurses on a study tour from Japan. They had the opportunity to take photos and interact with our handlers and dogs - a fun day was enjoyed by all.

Mothers Day

It was great to see so many people raising much needed funds for the Leukemia Foundation at Overall Park Southport. New Recruits

Welcome to Sarah and Missy (both still at school) and so keen. Residents love the girls and it is nice to have young blood.

Million Paws Walk

Thanks to those who joined us at the Million Paws Walk at Mt Tamborine on the 12 th of May. We all enjoyed the walk, fresh air and picnic.

Volunteering Expo

On the 18 th of May the Volunteering Expo was held at the Robina Town Centre hosted by Margaret May MP and Leticia Vargus from Volunteering Gold Coast. Many thanks to Leonie and Max for your wonderful support on the day and John (Leonie's husband) also lent a hand. The lucky door prize winner on the day generously donated their prize, a coloured TV, to Pets for Therapy to raffle. It was lovely to receive the feedback that our beautiful dogs drew in the crowd on that day.

Julie Anne has also donated two lovely handpainted wall hangings for our raffle - so be sure to get in early for your tickets.

Robyn & Mia

It was great to have Robyn and Mia from Burringbar join us on the 19 th of May at Galleon Gardens, Currumbin. Residents were thrilled to see them and Debbie and the staff made them very welcome.

Volunteering Gold Coast BBQ

On the 19 th of May Sonja and Ambra joined us at the Volunteering Gold Coast BBQ. Ambra, sporting her pink ears and tail, was a great attraction, especially with the kids.

Bright Eyes

Dedicated to those who love Dogs

When life is full of sadness

And everything seems grey

I look at you my mate

And my worries fade away.

You do not know the difference

Tween laughter and of tears

Yet all the while you look at me

With eyes that dance with cheer.

My precious little mate

You know not why I sigh

You just keep giving happiness

When you are by my side.

Your words are many, yet silent

I know your every need

You just accept me as I am

Your master and your friend.

Volunteers Newsletter April - May 2006

Lyons Haven

We received a very warm welcome at Lions Haven, Hope Island. Charlie Brown, Fergie and Misty were given much applause; the response from residents was wonderful. Some remembered when I taught line dancing there some time ago. We were surprised with a nice lunch and Easter eggs-thank you so much Margaret. Our Julieann is one of the staff

Puttin on The Ritz

Then on to the Ritz, a fine day as usual. Misty made a great Easter Bunny, everyone wanted photo's with our bunny. Our dear Russ was not so well, so we have a visit in his room. He was delighted to see us. He certainly had roses in his cheeks when we left (a very dear man).

Judy surprised us with a lovely card, flowers, morning tea and more Easter eggs. Thank you for the nice thought Judith.

Cypress Gardens

Muffin also made a cute bunny at Cypress Gardens. Missy is doing a great job teaching him tricks, which he seems to enjoy as he picks up what she wants very quickly. Sally, a longstanding resident, made a very sweet thank you speech to us all. Thank you also for the warm response from the visitors, many of them asked for the program so that they won't miss seeing us next visit.

Oops! Sorry

Sorry for the muck-up at Milpera Cottage, they forgot to inform me of the change. I should have e-mailed everyone; my mistake (not used to the convenience of having e-mail).

Once again, my apologies for the inconvenience.

Friends of PFT

Nice also to see so many facilities have become "Friends of PFT", it is a wonderful sign of your appreciation over 16 yrs. Thank you all.

QUT

QUT has once again contacted me to demonstrate at the Marriot Hotel for the nurses, teachers and doctors from Japan. Informing them what PFT is all about on the Gold Coast.
Dr Robert Thornton has relocated to Tasmania, we wish him well.

Lunch with Lou

Sonja, myself and Ambra had a nice visit and lunch with Lou, he was in good form as usual and kept us entertained. So nice to see him up and about and visiting with us again (can't keep a good man down)!!!

Thanks Leonie

Big Thanks to Leonie

Many thanks Leonie for the delightful day and lunch on Good Friday. Misty and Max-A-Million had a great time playing around the garden and ...; then a lovely walk around the lake

Big Kev!!

Kevin, we know you are extremely busy with your floral art classes in Brisbane and your shop at the Renaissance to run, but still you manage to get along when you can with Benjamin and Edward to Monday night classes.

Thanks! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Merrawyn for doing the newsletter and also for her untiring help with the equipment and Misty. You never let me down (many, many thanks).

Also to Glenis for her PR work and getting much needed mail away for us, I have been finding it difficult to keep up. Thank you so much Glenis.

Commemoration tree

The G.C.C.C have agreed to put a commemoration tree in Overell Park in memory of our dear Jo Jo. You will all be invited to the planting.

Looking forward to the lunch at Avica in June again this year; hope you all have invites.

It began for me with a Dawn Service at Earlehaven and then on to Hibiscus House to honour past and present service men and women; including current and ex-members of our Australian armed forces. Thank you for your sacrifice, bravery & courage and for giving us such a great country to live in. We are so very proud of you.

NEWSLETTER REVIEW TO MARCH 2006

We had a much-needed break in January and were welcomed back in February with open arms from the residents. To them it seemed forever since they had seen our wonderful dogs and volunteers.

Firstly, I would like to thank all the folk who volunteered their services in getting the Christmas bon-bons and gifts together for distribution to the homes over the festive season especially Dagmar Morovic and Leonie's mother Edith.

Training Sessions - Summer Break

As usual, training on Monday evenings continued throughout the break at Overell Park, Brighton Pde., Southport; a delightful spot, with breezes from the Broadwater.

The Valentine's Theme was a great success; celebrated at 9 homes. The residents were most interested to hear the origin of Valentine's Day and to see the doggies in their red and white apparel. It was so nice to see a gentleman (102 yrs) enjoying our visit at St. James Park.

We were welcomed back with open arms, and what a delightful theme St. Valentine's Day is, which was enjoyed by all. The dog's appearance brought smiles and laughter from the residents.

Cyn-D is doing a wonderful job training Wooky (who is to be an assistance dog) and has also done a great job training Bee-Cee in her line dancing and other talents.

Lou has not been well of late, but always helps where he can.

Thanks Lou.

New Volunteers

We would like to welcome Missy and Muffy to our team. They come highly recommended from the Gold Coast Obedience Training Club and certainly a delight.

Muffy is a Maltese/Shitzu cross.

Missy (only 15 yrs old) has done a wonderful job in training young Muffy in obedience and tricks .

St Patrick's Day - a fun day. The residents enjoyed singing along with the Irish music and reminisced about their Irish heritage. The doggies made wonderful little Leprechauns in their green jackets and hats, which is the traditional springtime green and the lucky colour of the Irish.

Some of the Residents and Day Respite visitors have kissed the Blarney Stone.

The new Hillview House at Merrimac is a delight to visit. The home has many new concepts in aged care; the theme features colourful Australian native birds. A lovely way to spend the latter years.

The center has just completed a wonderful activities room, where we will perform our program and in high care is a lovely garden roof setting.

It was a thrill to see so many of the resident's family members enjoying our St Patrick's Day presentation .

It goes without saying, the appreciation to all our wonderful volunteers for their time and effort they give so selflessly.

Looking forward to our Easter theme.

Monte's Story

I'm currently training a dog for Animal Assisted Therapy Australia ( http://www.therapydogs.org.au). Nicole Hargreaves, who virtually IS the organisation, posted a request for assistance from an experience obedience trainer on a positive training discussion list I belong to. She wanted someone to take a suitable dog to near trial standard in obedience plus teach it other useful behaviours before she put the finishing touches on and placed it with a disabled person. It sounded like a wonderful challenge that would improve my training skills, and I also thought that a second dog would provide much-needed companionship to my young Border Collie BeeCee.

The handler Nicole has in mind for this dog has multiple sclerosis and is in a wheel chair. She needs a dog that can retrieve a wide range of objects, such as the TV remote, mobile phone, and anything else she drops, as well as open and close doors and tug her socks off. In addition, the dog has to heel flawlessly beside a wheel chair and NEVER cross in front of the chair. Nicole prefers to use Springer or Brittany Spaniels as assistance dogs. However, this handler is unable to do any grooming, so Nicole decided to look for a Whippet to train for her. There are only just over 100 Whippets registered in Queensland, so we were very fortunate to almost immediately find one with a good temperament, in the right age range (1-2 years), who was looking for a new home. Monte was previously trained at Gold Coast Dog Obedience Training Club through Canine Companion Classes 1 and 2 by his first owner, so he had an excellent start on what he would need to know.

Monte has been with me since February 11, and will stay for a total of two to three months. He and BeeCee get on wonderfully, and will both miss each other when he moves on. I am very pleased with Monte's progress thus far. He's a gentle soul, so pulling on lead almost isn't in his repertoire. What a change from BeeCee! But retrieve isn't natural for him at all, so we've had to build it up in very small steps. He's now tugging gently on sock toes and learning to tug on a door pull, and his obedience is coming along well. He's good in public, having attended Pilates and aerobics classes, been to my office, participated in Pets for Therapy visits to nursing homes, and helped celebrate a birthday at Sunday brunch at Domani's in Main Beach. I'm enjoying learning to deal with a very different type of dog than my Borders. Whippets are not supposed to be the easiest dogs to train, but with positive methods I'm finding that he learns pretty well.
