Gifts going out from the heart
Yvonne Cody calls them 'gifts from the heart'.
They're 500 beautifully decorated little Christmas present
and bon bons Yvonne and the other volunteers with the Gold Coast's "Pets
for Therapy" program will deliver to local nursing homes residents
over the next few weeks.
But the generous gesture nearly didn't happen this year because
PFT a totally voluntary program, had grown to such a degree that the
self-funded organisation could not see how everyone at the homes could
get a present this year.
However there's a saying that 'what goes around comes
around' and the group that brings joy to so many has now been given
a helping hand.
It was a chance question in Southport's overell Park that
lead to that help arriving.
Yvonne, who founded Pets for Therapy 12 years ago was
exercising her poodle Jo Jo and taking the chance to pick up gum nuts
and banksia pods to decorate the Christmas parcels, when fellow dog
owner, Ingrid Neugebauer, asked her what she was doing.
"She offered to help and with a couple of other women
approached a number of local traders who all responded with warm and
spontaneous generosity giving small items such as soaps, handcream and
hankies, paper and decorations for the little gifts, "said Yvonne.
She said this assistance meant that the people for whom
the Pets For Therapy program had become such a joy would get a Christmas
gift this year.
"It is so important because for some of them it will
be the only gift they get," said Yvonne.
